Last news, January 2011

Well, it's done... We eventually launched our Atlantic crossing toward Rio de Janeiro.
We left Walvis bay, in Namibia, on Christmas day and arrived at Santa Helena on January 3th, nine and a half days later.
On january 2nd, crossing the Paimpol's meridien (3°W) we closed (in longitudes) the circumnavigation we undertook on May 1998.
In Santa Helena, complying with the unavoidable pilgrimage along the "napoleonic sites" left us with time enough to finish the account of our stay in South Africa and Namibia, and to update this site. So, we are ready now to put under sail again and we plan our approach of the Rio de Janeiro area by beginning of February, about twenty days after leaving here.

Last news, February 2010

Are we like a weather-vane on top of a church steeple? Changing our minds as the wind changes direction?
It's been months since we announced our intention to sail to Brazil in January/February 2010 and we have kept you all informed of our preparations. Except that here we are on the point of leaving to go back to France, by plane from Cape Town... You could say "Peter and the Wolf".
The imminent arrival of a baby grand daughter probably has something to do with our change of heart, as well as the ongoing building work in our house in Brittany, and the preparation for welcoming our children and grand children this summer. But really, we should have shown more consistency with our future projects......

Well, we've finally decided and the trip to Brazil is now planned for next December. Meanwhile Getaway will be waiting for us on theAtlantic coast, in one of the South African marinas.
This is not going to stop us from publishing the next number of the A.R.B. Gazette with an account of the passage through the Mozambique Canal and our stay in South Africa.... More soon.

Last news, december 2009

Here we are, and as expected, we left Madagascar in October.
Before we even entered the Mozambique channel passage, we began having problems with our autopilot and we had to reroute to Mayotte to fix them. As a consequence we "lost" 3 weeks, spent fixing various problems and waiting for new autopilot electronics (and enjoying the company of our friends who live on the island).
Finally, by the end of november, we arrived in Richards Bay (South Africa). Since then, we have hauled out Getaway to have her hull cleaned and painted. It's over now and we are bracing ourselves to happily celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve. We'll be taking the opportunity during this stay to visit some of the large animals in their natural habitat and to have, once more, a lot of fun with friends who are here, before leaving to find new friends farther across the sea.

We are also taking the opportunity to resume our epistolary activities and we will be publishing a new issue of ARB gazette (N°34). Was it encouragement coming from the resumption of our voyage? Emails from a few faithful readers have certainly a lot to do with that... For us, this issue is an opportunity to get back in thouch with the gazette as well as with our journey. Its content is not very nautical, but the next issue should taste more of salt water...

Early january, we'll be looking forward to a weather forecast window promising a comfortable rouding of the Cape of Good Hope.
